Bundle Up: Outdoor Activities in Asheville, NC
Don’t think of the weather as “cold” - think of it as invigorating and refreshing. It helps, it really does. Dress properly and hit:
If you love speed and adrenaline and participating in a sport in which you throw yourself down a mountain, visit Wolf Ridge. There are fifteen trails of varying ability levels from beginner to insane. If you’ve never skied or snowboarded, don’t worry: take a few lessons from expert instructors to get your snow legs under you.
Also, be sure to try snow tubing: this is great for the whole family. This is the ultimate sliding adventure and the slope is 350 feet of fun. You know how the worst part of sledding is walking back up the hill? Just ride the magic carpet lift back to the top. The. Best.
If you want to make a weekend of it, rent a cabin or townhouse at the resort or stay at one of the nearby hotels.
Hit the Trails
Go for a winter hike: it’s challenging, exhilarating, and the views cannot be beaten. Try:
- Bearwallow Mountain Trail (1 mile)
- Moore Cove Falls Trail (¾ mile) If the rocks are not icy, walk behind the waterfall!
- Lovers’ Leap Loop Trail (1.5-mile round trip) Stop at the hot mineral springs for a soak!
All right… it’s not your typical outdoor activity, but you will enjoy fresh air, exercise, and… beer. If you use the map provided here, the crawl is just about a mile long, and you’ll enjoy a wide variety of excellent brews and some snacks to refuel before your next Asheville winter adventure.
